From November 8th to 11th, Rimini Fiera will host the 10th edition of ECOMONDO International Trade Fair on Material & Energy Recovery & Sustainable Development, this sector´s most important expo. Since 1997, ECOMONDO has focussed attention on a cycle that in the early years was outlining its future development, but is now to all effects an industrial sector with a great economic value and fundamental social value. Because safeguarding the environment now means manufacturing with materials that can be re-used, and at ECOMONDO the progress of this concept has been punctually presented year after year in the expo.
These are not theoretical concepts – ECOMONDO attendees have been able to verify this progress which, alongside the important expo event, year after year took the concrete form of high profile operations such as the launch of a master course in waste management technology, also backed by Rimini Fiera at the University of Bologna (Rimini–branch), the export of the ECOMONDO model to Shanghai (Ecomondo China from 27th to 30th June 2006) and Moscow (one-to-one workshops between trade members) and the staging of ECOFATTO, a exhibition that travels round Italy, showcasing a complete repertory of products made from recycled material.
THE ECOMONDO 2006 EXPO AREA
|
ECOMONDO 2006 will occupy ten halls of Rimini Expo Centre, precisely the entire west wing (C1, C3, C5, C7, A1, A3, A5 and A7) and the first two halls in the east wing (B1 and D1).
As is the tradition, the core of the expo will mainly regard the complete waste cycle – through to end products made from recycled material.
This year, there will be a further focus on technologies for the treatment and transformation of individual material and a high profile will also be given to waste handling, particularly that resulting from construction and demolition, with demo areas and dedicated routes. In its expansion process, ECOMONDO has also proposed new expo sectors, which are now firmly established and represent precious added value for the expo "Systems and technology for the complete water cycle", "Energy from renewable sources and sustainable mobility", "Air quality", "Risks and safety", "Analysis and integrated control systems" and "Service for the environment".

The 2006 edition of ECOMONDO will further boost these areas, which in previous years had already assumed a role of great importance for the expo.
This is the case with the sector entitled ÔEnergy from renewable sources, energy saving and efficiency, emission trading and sustainable mobility´, with the drawing up of a program of high profile events, thanks to the formation of a special scientific committee and thanks to the exclusive partnership with the six organizations linked with the SME sector (CONFAPI, Confartigianato, CNA, Confcommercio, Confesercenti, Confagricoltura) and with Euromobility, as well as the prestigious partnership with the Kyoto Club.
The section regarding the "Water cycle and reclamation of contaminated sites" will also be expanded, with the addition of exhibitors specialized in accessories useful for water treatment.
AIMS & NEW FEATURES
The intention is to celebrate ECOMONDO´s tenth anniversary with an even larger edition from the point of view of the actual expo, business meetings and international profile.ECOMONDO will continue to specialize in a precise way in individual materials (paper, wood, glass, aluminium, steel, plastic, rubber and electronic waste), exploiting everything new that is proposed regarding differentiated collection, treatment and re-use.
The waste sector´s development process will enable ECOMONDO to ensure its expo and cultural events an important focus on biological treatment of agricultural waste. This initiative will concentrate on the issue of energy generation on behalf of farms, a project launched with the confederations of the SME world. Proposals will include equipment for cultivating and transforming agricultural produce and by-products into biofuels. A direct representation of re-use will also be set up, within an exhibition showing the procedure for production and use of energy, starting from the agricultural sector and running through to service and manufacturing companies.
ECOMONDO will become an even more important reference point for public authorities (Ministries, Regions, Provinces and Municipalities) committed to programming action in favour of the environment. In particular, an important agreement has been inked with the Emilia Romagna Regional government which will bring to Rimini the Ôshowcase of environmental sustainability´, a project that includes ten or so thematic areas and involves a pool of key companies.
On the energy front, after the staging last year of the ÔIntelligent Energy Forum´, promoted by PMI italiana, ECOMONDO has formed a 3-year partnership with the six confederations, to proceed with a project (to be announced to the European Union in May in Brussels) which tends to involve small and medium Italian enterprises in expertise regarding energy saving and efficiency, distributed generation and use of alternative energy.
SCIENTIFIC SEMINARS & CONFERENCES
Once again in 2006, the cultural section of ECOMONDO will be a key point of the event and in its first two meetings, the scientific committee outlined the objectives to be concentrated on.
|
The main issues from a technical and scientific point of view will regard innovations and application of the recent regulations, composting and organic produce, strategies for waste prevention, energy recovery, innovative technologies, research, the economic and cultural aspects of integrated waste management. Other issues being faced will include emission Trading, sources, techniques, technologies, applicability of renewable energy, with a focus on biofuels obtained from agriculture, construction with low efficient energy consumption, sustainable mobility, fine particles, problems associated with the quality of air in indoor environments. The part regarding issues involved in water and contaminated sites will as always be full of proposals and international quality and will cover regulations and biotechnological innovation in reclamation and contaminated sites, the management aspects, treatment and cycle of the various types of water and application of the norms.

Professor Luciano Morselli, the coordinator of the entire seminar section, explains ´The great normative evolution, at both national and community level, will highlight an innovative methodological approach for the use of technologies and integrated control of the environment. The key aspects of the seminars will regard the recovery sector (water, contaminated sites, waste), material recycling processes and energy recovery. Precisely on the energy front, in the context of a global challenge, Italy must implement a policy of efficiency, lower consumption with the verification of the possible recovery of energy in all manufacturing cycles, through to micro projects on a local scale throughout the country. As always, Ecomondo will feature a complete authoritative overview of the work under way and discussions on the completed projects.´
Following up on last year´s successful experience, ECOMONDO will highlight the organization of informative events, during which the public can talk with the experts, asking questions and discussing the hottest topics. The "Science Cafés" will also be back to animate the expo area, in a sort of "instructions for use", bringing together experts and the general public.
THE SIMULTANEOUS STAGING OF RI3 Regenerate Refill Re-use
Simultaneously with ECOMONDO 2006, the second edition will be staged of RI3 Regenerate Refill Re-use, the expo showcasing companies involved in the regeneration and recycling of printing media (ink-jet cartridges and toner) and the recovery of surplus electric and electronic material, such as computers and mobile phones.
